Prayer in Saint-Germain-des-Près

jeudi, octobre 9th, 2008

Saint-Germain is one of the busiest neighbourhood of Paris. You will find thousands of tourists walking through the small streets and enjoying food at the many restaurants. In the middle of this frantic activity stands the Church of Saint-Germain-des-Près where this man had found some quieteness and stood still in contemplation in front of the Virgin Statue.

The 2CV Driver

lundi, octobre 6th, 2008

The Citroën 2CV is to the French like the Ford T to the Americans : an icon. It was the most successful vehicle produced after WWII and it was most famous for its unforgettable design and the legend that they would never roll. Nowadays, you still can see a few ones through the roads of France, yet in Paris they are mainly used to drive tourists in sightseeing tours. This shot was taken on the Place de la Concorde with the building in the back being the famous Hotel Crillon.

Wedding in Monceau

samedi, octobre 4th, 2008

Parc Monceau seems to be a must-do for « Just married » couples. Every weekend, you will encounter large groups of nicely dressed people following the bride and the groom for the traditional picture session in the center of the park. It was no differeent this morning, except for this small congregation that had fled to have a little chat between girls.

Exodus

vendredi, octobre 3rd, 2008

On the way from Saint-Ouen to Place de Clichy, you will probably cross over this old abandoned railway tracks. While you won’t see any steamy locomotives, you might find some people wandering through this quiet trail, especially on a sunny Sunday when a neighborhood fair takes place. The setting  together with the clothing and long disorganized queue of people made me think of an exodus to some hidden world in the Paris of the end of the 19th century.

Dummy with an endless future

jeudi, octobre 2nd, 2008

In the flea market, the fate of a few unlucky ones is to stand hours looking at endless flows of walkers by.  Once a month, they will eventually get to try on new clothes, but this apart, only the very slow scars of time will eventually lead to their end and … replacement.

Barbès-Rochechouart

mercredi, octobre 1st, 2008

This odd word is not the name of some smelly French cheese, but the one of a metro station in Montmartre. This shot was taken from the far left of the pier facing the Sacré-Coeur church hill. A boy was standing on the opposite pier. For a moment, it seemed that he was headed towards the rails, ignoring the yellow sign next to him where  « no trepassing, danger of death » was written. The kind of drama that happens several times a year in Paris. Hopefully not this time.
